Ma olen professionaalne pokkerimängija Tallinnast. Minu tulemused on avalikult kontrollitavad: 2,1 miljonit dollarit, 175 korda rahas, üks WSOP käevõru — Eesti esimene. Suurem osa sellest, mida see mulle õpetas, ei räägi pokkerist.

Miks see number loebWhy this number matters
Üks suur võit on variatsioon. Viisteist aastat kasumis on protsess. One big score is variance. Fifteen years in profit is process.
Käevõru on ilus. Aga käevõru üksi ei tõesta midagi — ühe turniiri võidab aeg-ajalt ka inimene, kellel vedas kolm päeva järjest. Seda juhtub igal aastal.
Vaata pigem 175. Sada seitsekümmend viis korda rahas tähendab, et sama otsustusprotsess pidas vastu läbi heade ja halbade aastate, läbi mängude, mis muutusid, ja läbi minu enda vigade. Ühte tulemust saab seletada õnnega. Sadat seitsetkümmet viit ei saa.
Ja selle kõrval on number, mida andmebaasid ei näita: viisteist aastat järjest kasumis. Turniiripokkeris ei tähenda see suuri võite — see tähendab, et sa oled endiselt siin siis, kui enamik neist, kellega sa alustasid, on ammu lõpetanud. Vastupidavus on selle ameti tegelik oskus.
Enamik elu valdkondi ei anna sulle head tagasisidet. Tulemused tulevad aeglaselt, need on segased ja sa ei saa kunagi teada, kas sul oli õigus või lihtsalt vedas. Pokker annab sama tagasiside kokkusurutud kujul — sadu kordi päevas, päris rahaga, koos kogu häbi ja hirmuga, mis sellega kaasneb.
Kui sa hindad kedagi — mind või kedagi teist — siis ära vaata tema parimat päeva. Vaata, mitu korda ta kohale ilmus ja kui kaua ta vastu pidas.
The bracelet is nice. But a bracelet on its own proves nothing — one tournament is occasionally won by someone who ran hot for three days. It happens every year.
Look at the 175 instead. A hundred and seventy-five cashes means the same decision process held through good years and bad ones, through games that changed, and through my own mistakes. One result can be explained by luck. A hundred and seventy-five cannot.
Alongside it sits a number the databases do not show: fifteen straight years in profit. In tournament poker that does not mean big scores — it means still being here when most of the people you started with stopped a long time ago. Durability is the real skill in this job.
Most areas of life give you terrible feedback. Results arrive slowly, they arrive noisy, and you never find out whether you were right or just lucky. Poker gives you the same feedback compressed — hundreds of times a day, with real money, with all the shame and fear that comes attached.
When you evaluate anyone — me or anybody else — do not look at their best day. Look at how many times they showed up and how long they lasted.

Sa juba tead, mida teha. Miski sinus takistab sind seda tegemast. You already know what to do. Something in you stops you doing it.
Ma ei ole kohanud ühtegi inimest, kelle tegelik probleem oleks olnud info puudus. Strateegia on tänapäeval odav — see on tasuta, see on YouTube'is, see on raamatus, mille sa juba ostsid. Puudu on teostus siis, kui läheb ebamugavaks.
Pokker oli minu jaoks koht, kus seda vahet ei saanud vältida. Iga kord, kui ma teadsin õiget käiku ja tegin midagi muud, seisis see numbrina ekraanil.
I have never met anyone whose real problem was a lack of information. Strategy is cheap now — it is free, it is on YouTube, it is in the book you already bought. What is missing is execution at the moment it becomes uncomfortable.
Poker was the place where I could not avoid that gap. Every time I knew the right move and did something else, it showed up on the screen as a number.

Rula ei lase sul vahele jätta seda osa, kus sa oled halb. Skating does not let you skip the part where you are bad.

I still skate. Partly because I like it, and partly because it is the only thing that keeps me honest about how many repetitions a skill actually costs.
On a board you cannot dress up your level. Either you are standing on the trick or you are not — and it happens in front of everyone, over and over, for weeks. No skill that means anything to me has ever arrived any other way.
